Material and Finish for Doors & Exterior Panels have a major effect on Kitchen costs

Kitchen renovation is not a job to be taken lightly as there are many issues to be considered.

There are a few ways that you can make your kitchen appear bigger, for example:

Painting the cabinets, walls and ceiling using light colour and removing any bulkheads from between the top of your cabinets and the ceiling will make the kitchen brighter and the appearance of being roomier.<

Installing glass doors on the upper cabinets and leaving some shelving open can also give the perception of space.

Try to also introduce natural light by installing a skylight or window, as this will create a roomier feel.

Keep the bench tops clear of clutter, utilising the cupboard space you have available for storage. This will add to the feel of openness and spaciouness.

As explained in more detail in the section About Costs the cost of Kitchen cabinets varies mainly due to the materials, finishes, colours and profiles chosen for doors, drawer fronts and covering panels- apart from the number of cabinets.

  • Melamine covered doors etc. are lowest cost, followed by Vinyl Wrap, painted 2-pack Polyurethane, then Wood Veneer and finally solid Wooden doors & panels.
The latter two vary much in price depending of thickness of the veneer and the species of (sometimes imported) wood.
  • Light Solid colour is lower in cost then darker colours (which need a lot more care in manufacturing), while Woodgrain and Patterned surfaces are more expensive due to wastage incurred in matching panels for an even look.
  • Matt or Textured finish is lower in cost, followed by Satin, Semi-gloss and High Gloss - the latter has a higher "risk premium" as small imperfections show up easily and re-work is often not possible and a complete Vinyl wrapped door may need to be discarded.
  • Plain straight edged Doors etc are the lowest cost, followed by bevelled edged doors, then Face and Edge profiled doors and highest cost for recessed panelling.

Replacing the benchtops with a new Laminate or Stone cover has the greatest overall effect - for Stone tops a specialist company should be engaged that will supply and install the selected material.

Laminated benchtops can be acquired through any kitchen supplier / installer or from a flat pack kitchen cabinetry manufacturer like Cabinets on-Demand a local supplier of made to measure self assembly benchtops.
The most economical solution will be the removal of old laminate and gluing in new laminate - but the success of such a move depends very much on the condition of the sub-strate. You do not want the laminate to lift a short time after installation, which may happen in the substarte was oil impregnated.

Replacing Doors and Drawer fronts to match any newly installed cabinets is also a normal feature of Kitchen renovation but is not always a perfect solution if the kitchen cabinetry has warped and the cabinets are not perfectly square anymore. Apart from the difficulty in hanging the new doors there may be a difference in the size of "gaps" between doors varying from 1 mm to 3 or 4 mm after hanging.

Often the best solution will be to replace some or all of the floor cabinets.

Sometimes people want to just add a few Upper (Wall) cabinets, or a Corner Pantry to an existing kitchen. Matching the material of the new cabinetry with existing design and colour can be a frustrating, expensive or impossible task.

If the existing cabinets were finished in Polyurethane then it is possible to get the colours matched, more or less; matching a specific Face Profile may be more difficult, the design may not be available anymore.

Matching wooden doors exactly is almost imposssible - age will have bleached existing ones - the same will be true for Vinyl Wrap and Coloured Melamine.
